The ability to make fire was extremely important in the everyday life of a mountain man. Most carried a small pouch on their belt that contained all the necessary tools to start a fire.

The Scouts will learn how to use a roughly knapped flint, and a primitive steel striker to start a fire. They will have time during the morning on Saturday to practice this skill. Later on during the Colter Run, each team will have to implement what they have learned to start a successful fire.
